Bible Truth #290 - Colossians 3:12-13

12  So, as those who have been chosen of God, holy and beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience;
13  bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, whoever has a complaint against anyone; just as the Lord forgave you, so also should you.

Is Paul writing to every human being ever born? Is he writing to everyone at Colossae? No. Paul is writing to the saints and faithful brethren in Christ (Colossians 1:2). This letter is for a specific group of people. So when he writes about the recipients of this letter in verse 12 “So, as those who have been chosen of God...” it is just as clear that there are those who are NOT chosen of God.

Please let me remind you once again of what Jesus said in John 15:16, You did not choose Me but I chose you, and appointed you that you would go and bear fruit, and that your fruit would remain...” Not only did God choose us, Jesus made it explicitly clear that we did not choose Him. The only thing we did was to respond to the work that God had already done in us (John 6:29) without which we could not respond, we could not act, and we could not initiate. God began the work in us when we were dead and He will complete it (Philippians 1:6).

Bottom Line - there are some whom God chose, there are many God did not choose, and there is no one who chose God.
