Bible Truth #301 - Jeremiah 17:9

The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?

Keeping along the same topic about which I wrote in Bible Truth #300, this is simply another passage that describes the condition of the heart of man. This is why the “T” in the 5 points (T.U.L.I.P.) of Calvinism as some call it, or Reformed Theology as it is more accurately known, represents the Total Depravity of man. Speaking of man in Genesis 6:5, God told us that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil, continually. There is no pause from “continually” in order for him to make a decision to be saved or to accept Christ.

In the passage above God tells us again - this time through Jeremiah. There is NO exception.

Again I ask, how can a man whose heart produces evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, lasciviousness, thefts, covetousness, wickedness, an evil eye, deceit, blasphemy, pride, and foolishness - CONTINUALLY; whose heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked; how can this heart make a decision FOR Christ?

IT CAN’T.

We become children of God NOT by human decision (John 1:13). It’s God’s decision and He made it before the foundation of the world. (Ephesians 1:4)
