Bible Truth #285 - John 4:22-24

22  You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews.
23  “But an hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers.
24  “God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”

Jesus is speaking these words to the “Woman at the well,” the one who had five husbands and was currently living with a man out of wedlock. But I wanted to point out the words He spoke in verse 24. “God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”

How can a man with a dead spirit worship God in spirit? He can’t! His spirit is dead. This is why Lydia (Acts 16:14), even though she was a God-worshipper, was not pleasing God because she was not worshipping Him in spirit. She was lost and spiritually dead, everything she did was in the flesh. So no matter how good-intentioned her worship was, she was still just as lost as the Pharisees who hated Jesus, and she could do nothing until God FIRST opened her heart. (Bible Truth #91)

A lost man, a man with a dead spirit, can’t worship in a God-pleasing way because he must worship in spirit. This is also why he can understand NOTHING from the Holy Spirit because he does not HAVE the Holy Spirit. Everything he hears is foolishness and he doesn’t understand it (1 Corinthians 2:14).

Bottom Line - Because God must be worshipped in spirit and truth, there is no way a lost man can properly worship God because his spirit is DEAD. (Ephesians 2:1, 2:5, Colossians 2:13)
