Bible Truth #123 - Lamentations 3:38

Is it not from the mouth of the Most High that both calamities and good things come? (NIV)

Out of the mouth of the most High proceedeth not evil and good? (KJV)

The 9.1 earthquake and resulting tsunami that hit Japan on March 11, 2011; the more than 275 aftershocks within the next 2.5 days (12-15 per hour) that were greater than 5.0, one of which hit 6.8 and another 7.1 (April 7); all of which were not “allowed” to happen by God - they were ordained (appointed) by God to occur.

The EF-5 tornado that struck Joplin, Missouri on May 22, 2011 killing 158 people or more and resulting in an estimated $3,000,000,000 of damage was ordained (appointed) by God to occur.

The 8.8 earthquake that hit Chile on February 27, 2010; the 124 aftershocks within the next 2.5 days that were greater than 5.0, one of which hit 6.9; all of which were ordained (appointed) by God to occur.

The 7.0 earthquake that hit Port-Au-Prince, Haiti on January 12, 2010 killing possibly 200,000 people was ordained (appointed) by God to occur, He did not “allow” it to happen.

The 9.3 earthquake off the coast of Indonesia on December 26, 2004 that was the longest earthquake ever recorded (8.3 to 10 minutes) causing a tsunami which struck 14 countries and had a death toll estimated at between 230,000 and 310,000 people was ordained (appointed) by God to occur, He did not “allow” it to happen.

Are not these earthquakes and tornado considered calamities? This verse makes it clear that these calamities came from the mouth of the Most High God, the sovereign Creator of the Universe. This is why most of the world calls earthquakes, tsunamis, tornados, hurricanes, and volcanic eruptions Acts of God.

And TO Christians, (NOT FOR Christians) according to Romans 8:28, TO Christians, these earthquakes are, and WILL be, for good. They are, and WILL be, for the Glory of God, Amen. This is why Ephesians 5:20 Paul writes we are to thank God FOR everything. Why? Because He has ordained these things to occur. Just as those ordained (appointed) to eternal life believed the Truth when Paul preached It (Acts 13:48). They did not ordain (appoint) themselves to believe, God did. The ordination came before the believing. And those NOT ordained (appointed) to eternal life did NOT believe, and WILL not believe. It really IS that simple.

It is only by trying to make the Bible say something that isn’t there that Salvation gets “complicated.”

Bottom Line: It all comes down to the sovereignty of God. He is, and we’re not.
