Bible Truth #124 - Lamentations 5:21

Lamentations 5:21
Restore us to yourself, O LORD, that we may return; renew our days as of old.

If restoration occurs, Who does it?  God does it, not man.  It is all God’s plan, whether He restored the people to Himself that particular month in which Jeremiah wrote that, or 10 years later.  The restoration originates, is executed, and completed by God - according to the plan which “He decreed and ordained long ago.” (Lamentations 2:17)  So you see, He won’t even restore unless He planned it long ago.

But the order in which God has Jeremiah record His words is very important and often overlooked.  God restores, THEN His people return.  They can’t return until they’re restored.  Restoration by God occurs first.  Can they restore themselves to God?  NO!  Read it again - Jeremiah is pleading with God to restore His fellowship which THEN causes them to return.  This is mirrored in John 6:29, the work of God is that a man believes.  Man can’t believe until God works in him and GIVES him belief (Philippians 1:29).

Bottom Line: God works first and His work results in the people returning, just as in salvation - God works resulting in the saved coming to Christ. (John 6:37)
