Bible Truth #76 - Isaiah 45:9

“Woe to him who quarrels with his Maker, to him who is but a potsherd among the potsherds on the ground. Does the clay say to the potter, ‘What are you making?’ Does your work say, ‘He has no hands’?

The problem is, those who believe in free will aren’t saying, “What are you making?” They are saying, “You aren’t making anything at all. The pot is making itself.”

God is the Potter, we are the clay, and until He saves us, the lost are as dead as the lump of clay and CAN’T make any decisions for Christ or God at all. That’s what John 1:13 means when God had John write that we become children of God NOT by human decision.

This is the reason that God uses the example of the Potter in both the Old Testament (above) and the New Testament (Romans 9:19-21; Bible Truth #74). The Arminian can’t say, “We’re not the same as clay because we can think,” because I’ll respond, “And God is making you think what He wants you to.” (Philippians 2:13)

God is perfect and used the illustration of the Potter for a perfect reason. We ARE clay and before God saves us, we CAN’T think Godly about spiritual things because we’re DEAD. We can do ONLY what is natural for us, and the natural state of our spirit is DEAD. As Bible Truth #6 (Jeremiah 13:23) covered, can an Ethiopian change his skin or a Leopard its spots? No! Neither can we, who are used to doing evil, do good (i.e. believe). We just can’t do it. God does with us humans whatever He wants. We were ALL headed for Hell because of Adam, and God, in His Mercy and Love, chose to save some.

Is the Christian who believes in decisional salvation quarreling with his Maker? Yes! Therefore, I urge him to stop quarreling with his Maker and believe God's Word.
