Bible Truth #140 - Romans 6:6

Romans 6:6
For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin—

Our old self was crucified... when? When was our old self crucified with Him?

Fact: Jesus was the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world. (Revelation 13:8)
Fact: We were chosen IN HIM before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in His sight. (Ephesians 1:4)
Whereas, our old self was crucified with Him before the foundation of the world, it is something that happened in eternity, BEFORE time.
Therefore, if a man was not crucified with Christ before the foundation of the world, if a man wasn’t chosen in Him before the foundation of the world, he will never be saved. As Bible Truth #94 states (Isaiah 43:13), God acted and chose a bride for His Son, it will not be reversed.

And finally, a note about free will. Paul concludes the verse with the phrase ...that we should no longer be slaves to sin clearly speaking of our condition before we were saved. And since it is an important bit of doctrine, Paul repeated it in verses 17-18. Before we were saved, we were slaves. Do spiritual slaves have a free will? No.

Does not Paul carry enough weight in this area? How about Jesus’ own words in John 8:44? ...and the lusts of your father ye will do. Not might do, not choose to do, but WILL do.

Jesus raises up EVERY man God draws (John 6:44), NOT every man who accepts the drawing.
