Bible Truth #16 - 1 Corinthians 1:18

1 Corinthians 1:18
For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

If there is a message of any sort that you think is foolishness will you believe it? Of course not! You don’t believe in Al Gore’s theory of man-made global warming do you? Of course not, neither do I because it is foolishness. Ecclesiastes 1:9 says that there is nothing new under the sun - so if there is global warming now, there has been before and there will be again. Actually, you may not believe my explanation of salvation and how God is sovereign in His choosing to save some men. Why? Because you may think it’s foolishness! Neither of us, nor anyone, will believe ANYTHING we think is foolishness.

Well, regarding v18 above, who are those who are perishing? Those who are perishing are the lost of the world, everyone who is not saved (and everyone who is not saved YET). The message of the cross is foolishness to every one of them and NONE of them will believe it. Why? For the same reason you may not believe my understanding of man’s role in salvation. They (the lost) think the message of the cross is foolishness and they will NEVER believe it in their current spiritual condition, and no man can change his spiritual condition. Not only WILL they not believe (John 3:20), they CAN NOT believe (John 8:43). Those chosen but not saved YET will believe only after God quickens their dead spirit.

Why did God do it this way? I don’t know, His ways are not our ways (Isaiah 55:8). I’m sure if God asked man how He should do it, man would tell Him to give everyone the opportunity AND ability to believe and then let them decide if they want to be saved (which is the way a lot of people think it is now). But nope, He gives NO ONE the opportunity - the implication in “opportunity” is once the situation presents itself, the man has a choice whether to accept the “opportunity” or not. That is so wrong. NO ONE is given the opportunity nor the choice any more than Lazarus was given the opportunity or choice. God quickens a dead man’s spirit and that man who is now alive comes to Christ (John 6:37) There is no option, he WILL come.

We become children of God NOT by human decision, THAT’S Bible. (John 1:13)
