Bible Truth #171 - 1 Corinthians 6:19-20

1 Corinthians 6:19-20
19  Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own;
20  you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.

Read that again - You are not your own, you were bought at a price. I would first like to establish exactly to WHOM Paul was writing when he wrote YOU are not your own, YOU were bought at a price. In the first chapter of this letter, verse two, Paul makes it crystal clear he is not writing to those who are lost but the saved, the church of God in Corinth, those sanctified in Christ Jesus, along with all who call on the name of Jesus Christ. Now, back to the main point.

Whether he knows it or not, whether he will acknowledge it or not; by saying that a man makes a “free will decision” whether or not to accept Christ, the Arminian is claiming we are our own - we own ourselves. He is WRONG and this passage proves it. We are not our own. We never have been and we never will. God owns everything and everybody (Psalm 24:1). This is another example (similar to the term adoption) of the salvation that God provides being equated to terminology with which we should all be familiar. We were BOUGHT at a price.

When you buy something, anything, does the object of purchase have a say in whether it will “allow” you to purchase it? In our nation’s history, as well as the history of the ancient world, when a man or woman was purchased in the marketplace as a slave, did they have a right to reject being purchased? The answer is no.

The Arminian may say, “But wait, we are not slaves!” To that I say, “Au Contraire.”

Paul writes in Romans 6:17-18 that we [Christians] used to be slaves to sin but are now slaves to righteousness (Bible Truth #121). Regardless of which, every single human being ever born IS a slave. As slaves, when WE were purchased, we had no say in the matter what - so - ever.

We become children of God NOT by human decision. (John 1:13)
