Bible Truth #208 - Romans 4:20

Yet he did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God,

In this passage Paul is writing of Abraham.  Where did Abraham get His faith?  Did Abraham acquire this faith on his own, of his own volition? No! Faith is a gift from God (Ephesians 2:8) and He gives it to whom He wants. The lost have no faith (2 Thessalonians 3:2), their spirit is dead (Ephesians 2:1, 2:5; Colossians 2:13).

Who strengthened his faith? Abraham didn’t strengthen his own faith. Again, God did it apart from anything Abraham did. It is God Who measures out every spiritual ounce and gram of faith anyone has, will have, or doesn’t have (Romans 12:3). There is NOTHING we do to merit it, or to earn it; nor can we reject it. This is why Paul writes to accept him whose faith is weak (Romans 14:1) - because it is God who gives everyone every bit of faith they have and if you don’t accept him whose faith is weak, you’re not accepting God’s plan for that man’s life.

Bottom Line - God is sovereign and not only does He decide who gets strong faith, He decides who gets any faith at all. Abraham was strengthened in his faith and he gave glory to God because God was the One who strengthened it.
