Bible Truth #199 - Matthew 21:15-16

Matthew 21:15-16
15  But when the chief priests and the teachers of the law saw the wonderful things he did and the children shouting in the temple area, “Hosanna to the Son of David,” they were indignant.
16  “Do you hear what these children are saying?” they asked him. “Yes,” replied Jesus, “have you never read, “ ‘From the lips of children and infants you have ordained praise’?”

Hmmm.... I suppose the man who believes in free will claims that God had foreknowledge regarding the praise Jesus was receiving from the children.

Unfortunately foreknowledge isn’t in this text at all. Jesus was quoting Psalm 8:2 which states God had ordained it, appointed it, determined it to occur. It doesn’t even hint that God knew the children would start praising Jesus so He THEN appointed it to occur.  Will the man who believes in free will claim that these children just up and decided to start praising this Man because of what He was doing? That might be believable had it not been in Psalms that God had appointed it to occur.

Even if I agree with the premise the children were doing it of their own “free will,” I contend God changed their “wanter” and MADE them WANT to do it. “Aghast!!! But that would take away from the free will of man!!” the free will believer will cry. What free will? I say again show me in God’s Word this so-called free will. The only free will a lost man has is to do evil continually (Genesis 6:5) - IF he has any free will at all.

I have a friend who prays that her parents receive the Gospel. Exactly what does that mean? Does she want God to override their “free will?” What does she want God to do? She believes in free will but is she asking God to intervene? Exactly what does she want God to do if not override their free will?

Using his “free will” a lost man WON’T come into the Light (John 3:20), a lost man CAN’T understand Truth (John 8:43) because one who is not Elect doesn’t belong to God (John 8:47), it is impossible for him to believe foolishness, which is what the Gospel is to him (1 Corinthians 2:14) and it is impossible for a lost man to please God (Romans 8:8). A man who was not chosen in Christ before the foundation of the world has no hope of being saved (Ephesians 2:12, 1 Thessalonians 4:13).

God appointed those children to praise Jesus and He had King David record the prophesy in Psalm 8:2. God is sovereign, man is not and has NO FREE WILL. Regarding God’s sovereignty it appears Arminians are as indignant as the chief priests and teachers of the law were when they heard uneducated, immature children shouting praise.
