Bible Truth #230 - Romans 11:28-29

28  As far as the gospel is concerned, they are enemies on your account; but as far as election is concerned, they are loved on account of the patriarchs,
29  for God’s gifts and His call are irrevocable

Irrevocable? Hmmm, here is another verse that the Arminian will have come up with a creative explanation because if you look at it one way, I’ve heard it preached (by Arminians) “God will come to you and the Holy Spirit will draw you and if you reject Him, He is not obligated to come to you any more. You may only get one chance.

But this passage says His gifts and His call are irrevocable. Does that not mean the Holy Spirit would have to come over and over and over until the lost person accepts the free gift because earlier in this letter (Romans 8:30) Paul writes that every person God calls, He glorifies. So either the call IS revocable, i.e. God stops coming to a person (as the Arminian believes); or God does not call everyone - which He doesn't (1 Corinthians 1:26).

Bottom Line: His call is irrevocable but He calls ONLY His Elect, those chosen in Christ before the foundation of the world (Ephesians 1:4).
