Bible Truth #190 - Proverbs 30:5-6

Proverbs 30:5-6
5  Every word of God is flawless; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him.
6  Do not add to his words, or he will rebuke you and prove you a liar.

Add not to His words? Oh my. There are a lot of preachers who are in serious trouble. For years, since the early 20th century, some Southern Baptist preachers have been adding to God’s Words.

- they have been preaching that a lost man has the ability to THINK good things. That is not in God’s Word - Genesis 6:5 states the opposite.
- they have been preaching God loves every single person who ever lived. That is not in God’s Word and Psalm 5:5 and 11:5 state the opposite.
- they have been preaching that a lost man must make a decision to accept Jesus as their Savior. That is not in God’s Word - John 1:13 states the opposite.
- they have been preaching that a lost man can love Jesus and come to Him. That is not in God’s Word - John 3:20 states the opposite.
- they have been preaching that a lost man has the ability to DO good. That is not in God’s Word and in fact, Jesus says the opposite (Matthew 12:35, Luke 6:45). Paul also writes of this (Romans 3:10-12).
- they have been preaching that a lost man can understand the Gospel. That is not in God’s Word and in fact Jesus says the opposite (John 8:43). Paul also writes of this (1 Corinthians 2:14).
- they have been preaching that a lost man can please God by repenting of his sins and trusting Christ as his Savior. That is not in God’s Word and in fact, Paul writes the opposite (Romans 8:8).

There are many more but these are enough to make my point. In fact, any one of them alone makes the point about adding to God’s Word. The Arminian will claim I misunderstand those passages (and many others) but will not explain or reconcile their belief which contradicts many passages such as those I’ve referenced here.

I left one denomination because of beliefs and practices not found in the Bible. When God says do not add to His Words, I would be VERY careful about claiming beliefs not found in, nor supported by, Scripture. I believe it is very clear - in Proverbs 30:6 God is proving Arminians as liars. Harsh words but neither did Jesus mince words.
