Bible Truth #241 - Luke 10:23

Then he turned to his disciples and said privately, “Blessed are the eyes that see what you see.

Wait one minute! Didn’t ALL the people see the Lord do the miracles? Didn’t ALL the people present see Him cast out demons? Didn’t ALL the people present in each of the towns “see” the 70 disciples perform healings, and casting out demons? (Luke 10:1-17) The answer to all this is yes. But all these people saw ONLY with their physical eyes. Jesus is referring here to those who saw with spiritual eyes.

What is the condition of the eyes of a lost man? A lost man is sightless, he is spiritually blind. He can see nothing with his spiritual eyes because he is dead and a dead man can see nothing. If a lost man can see nothing, and can hear nothing, and understand nothing (John 8:43, 1 Corinthians 2:14) there is no way he is able to believe.

So of course, in that context it is easy to understand what Jesus really meant when He said, Blessed are the eyes that see what you seebecause not all eyes could see... I believe the people who saw only with their physical eyes were actually cursed, not blessed. Why? Because at the Great White Throne judgment (Revelation 20:11), where every man will appear before God whose names were NOT written in the Lamb’s Book of Life from the foundation of the world (Revelation 17:8), people will be judged for their rejection of Christ and receive a harsher punishment than those who never witnessed Christ or never heard the Gospel. That is another topic which is covered more in depth here (Bible Truth #340).

It is no coincidence that Jesus said this in the very next breath after He said (Bible Truth #81) “...no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal Him.That is why their eyes were blessed. Because they were chosen...

Bottom line: the saved who “saw” the miracles were blessed, those who didn’t see with spiritual eyes were not.
