Bible Truth #37 - Proverbs 16:4

The LORD works out everything for his own ends— even the wicked for a day of disaster.

“Obviously the words can’t mean what they seem to say. I mean, man IS involved in some way, right? The Lord DOES consider the wishes of a man, doesn’t He? Everything doesn’t mean everything, right? God is working SOME things in the world for His pleasure, but not man’s will, right?”

NO, NO, NO, and NO! God works out EVERYTHING for HIS own ends, not man’s! And “everything” includes man’s will (John 6:29, Philippians 2:13).

Need something in the New Testament that says the same thing? Ephesians 1:11 - God works ALL things after the counsel of His own will. I see nowhere in the Old or New Testament where God gives man a choice once he’s been “called” to salvation (Romans 8:30). When God calls - “YOU ARE COMING!” (John 6:37)

But now look at the second part of that verse - even the wicked for a day of disaster. Again, both the Old Testament AND the New Testament support that statement. Deuteronomy 32:35 is the Scripture used for what some consider to be the best sermon ever preached in this country - “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” by Jonathan Edwards, preached in Enfield Connecticut, 1741. And in the New Testament read Romans 9:21-22. Both the Deuteronomy and Romans passages are below and both support “even the wicked for a day of disaster.”

Written by two men separated in time by thousands of years (Solomon writing Proverbs and Paul writing to the Ephesians) those verses say the same thing. Why? Because it is the same God who inspired both of them and the last time I looked, God is immutable. PRAISE GOD!!!

Deuteronomy 32:35 It is mine to avenge; I will repay. In due time their foot WILL slip; their day of disaster is near and their doom rushes upon them.”

Romans 9:21-22 Does not the potter have the right to make out of the same lump of clay some pottery for noble purposes and some for common use? What if God, choosing to show his wrath and make his power known, bore with great patience the objects of his wrath - prepared for destruction?
