Bible Truth #36 - John 6:65

He went on to say, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has enabled him.”

This is very similar to John 6:44 that I wrote of a few days ago. Jesus talked again of lost people not being able to come to Him unless something occurs FIRST. In John 6:44 Jesus said the Father must draw them (the lost can’t come on their own), and here Jesus is saying that the Father must enable a man. Once again Jesus is making it clear that a lost man does not have the ability to come to Him without the Father doing something FIRST. And what is that something?

God enables a man by quickening his dead spirit - something that the lost man can’t do, nor even wants to do. Just like the dry bones Ezekiel saw in his vision of Ezekiel 37:1-14. Once a man has been quickened (enabled) he recognizes his wickedness and his need for a Savior. The Father draws him to Christ and he WILL come because he is one of those whom the Father has given to Jesus (John 6:37), and when did that take place? It took place before the foundation of the world (Ephesians 1:4).

A man with a dead spirit won’t come into the Light, he hates God (John 3:20), he can’t please God (Romans 8:8), everything he does is sin (Romans 14:23) because he does NOTHING in faith. Why? Because he has no faith (2 Thessalonians 3:2), he hasn’t been called (1 Corinthians 1:26), and he can’t understand ANYTHING from the Holy Spirit. (1 Corinthians 2:14)

This is the TOTAL DEPRAVITY of man. Totally depraved means a lost man can do NOTHING toward his own salvation - including believing, accepting, or choosing to follow Christ because without God working in that man, everything he does are works of the flesh. He can do nothing in the spirit because his spirit is dead (Ephesians 2:1, 2:5; Colossians 2:13).

We become children of God NOT by human decision. (John 1:13)
