Bible Truth #145 - 1 Peter 1:18-20

1 Peter 1:18-20
18  For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers,
19  but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect.
20  He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake.

Not only was Christ chosen before the creation of the world, so were we, His Elect (Ephesians 1:4). But also, not only was He chosen before the foundation of the world, He was crucified (slain) from the foundation of the world (Revelation 13:8).

But to the point of my message - Even though He was chosen before the foundation of the world, He was not revealed until the “Age of Grace” (the last times to which Peter was referring). And for WHOM was He revealed? He was revealed for our sake (v20), the sake of His Elect, Christians, all those God chose in Christ before the foundation of the world. This is made clear by those to whom Peter addressed his letter in verses 1 and 2 (Bible Truth #100). He wrote “To those ... who are chosen according to the foreknowledge of God ... to obey Jesus Christ...”

Did Peter write that Christ was revealed to the world? Did Peter even write that He was revealed to ALL men, much less all men throughout history? The answer to both of those questions is a resounding NO!

It is my point that He was revealed in these last times for our sake, NOT every man throughout history, but OUR sake - thereby proving Limited Atonement, the “L” in the acronym T.U.L.I.P.

T - Total Depravity of unsaved man, man can do nothing good in God’s eyes
U - Unconditional Election, God chose us based on nothing we did, including believe on Jesus. Belief is the result of God saving us.
L - Limited Atonement, Christ died for His people, the Elect, His Bride - NOT every soul who ever lived.
I - Irresistible Grace, Those God chose will come to Christ, they don’t have a choice.
P - Perseverance of the saints, once saved, always saved.
