Bible Truth #155 - Psalm 119:160

Psalm 119:160
The sum of Your word is truth, And every one of Your righteous ordinances is everlasting.

Even though every verse of the Bible is true, and every word of the Bible is Truth - this verse also tells us that every verse is reconciled with others. The SUM of your Word is Truth. Every verse on a subject supports others on the same subject and they all lead to the same conclusion. There is no verse that by itself supports a position or belief when there are other verses that contradict it. This verse in Psalms is the Old Testament version of 1 Peter 1:20 - But know this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one’s own interpretation,

The favorite verses Arminians use to support their theory (below) are misunderstood because, while alone they can be explained in a way that supports their belief, the explanation contradicts other verses in the Bible. There ARE explanations of these verses that reconcile with the rest of the BIble. The Reformed or Calvinist explanation may be called “wacky interpretation” by Arminians but they are the only explanations that support other Scripture and other Scripture affirms each explanation. Each of the following are discussed more in depth elsewhere, just click on the Scripture.

Matthew 23:37 - “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing.
Reformed Summary 1) The context of Matthew 23 is Christ’s condemnation of the Jewish religious leaders, not salvation.
Reformed Summary 2) This is not proof that Christ wants to save everyone. If anything, it is proof against it! Christ was not willing to gather the Jewish religious leaders, but their children.

1 Timothy 2:4 - who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.
When the King James Version translators wrote “all men” in this verse, they translated it from the Greek word pas (Strong’s #3956), which can be used two ways:
1) individually - each, any, every, anyone, etc... OR
2) collectively - some of all types or groups. One of the biggest stumbling blocks Arminians have, and anyone who believes in decisional salvation, is that they believe the Greek word pas can only mean individually (each and every) every time it is used. Besides studying the word itself which should clear it up, I give several examples of “all” being used collectively (some of all types) in Bible Truth #330. The truth may be argued but it can never be refuted.
Reformed Summary - ...Who wants some of all KINDS of men to be saved, not every soul who ever lived.

2 Peter 3:9 - The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
Reformed Summary - “any” and “all” in the latter part of the verse refer to the underlined “us” four words earlier, the Elect - not the entire human race.

1 John 2:2 - He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.
Reformed Summary - John frequently writes “world” when referring to both Jews AND Greeks. He was saying Christ was the atoning sacrifice not only for OUR sins (the author and recipients of the letter), but also for the sins of all believers throughout the world, whether they be Jew or Greek. Those who believe Jesus is the propitiation for not only our sins, but for the sins of every one who ever lived is a Universalist (everyone goes to Heaven). That is not true. There IS a Hell and those not saved WILL spend eternity in Hell (Lake of Fire).

Here are just a few verses that contradict the Arminian view of salvation:
Genesis 6:5 - Every imagination of the thoughts of a lost man’s heart is only evil continually, but the Arminian says a lost man can stop the evil and choose Christ.
Isaiah 55:11 - God’s Word will not return void but WILL accomplish what God wants, but the Arminian says when a man hears the Gospel and rejects It, God’s Word is returning void because He wants all men to be saved.
John 1:13 - a man is saved NOT by human decision, but the Arminian says man DOES make the decision to believe or not.
John 3:20 - a lost man will NOT come into the Light because he hates It, but the Arminian says a lost man WILL come into the Light when he wants to be saved.
John 6:29, Philippians 1:29 - belief is GIVEN to us, but the Arminian says a lost man has the capability to believe and must choose to believe even though God has not given him belief.
John 6:44 - Jesus raises up every man God draws, but the Arminian says God draws everybody and because man rejects the Truth, Jesus does NOT raise them up.
John 8:43-44 - the lost are not able to listen to the Truth because they are of their father the devil, but the Arminian says the lost can and do listen to (understand) the Gospel.
John 15:16 - He chose us, we DIDN’T choose Him, but the Arminian says the lost CAN choose Jesus.
Romans 3:11 - no one seeks God and no one understands, but the Arminian claims there ARE lost men who seek God.
Romans 8:8 - a lost man can NOT please God, but the Arminian says a lost man CAN please God by accepting Jesus as his Savior.
Romans 8:29-30 - God glorifies ALL those He has called, but the Arminian believes everyone is called but man can and does reject the call to salvation so God does NOT glorify all those He calls.
1 Corinthians 1:18 - the message of the cross is foolishness to the lost, but the Arminian says it is not. A lost man DOES have the capability to see the wisdom of God in Christ crucified.
1 Corinthians 1:26 - Only a limited number of people are called to salvation and will be saved. The Arminian believes each and every man is called but a man is able to reject it.
1 Corinthians 2:14 - a lost man can’t understand ANYTHING from the Holy Spirit and that it is foolishness, but the Arminian says a lost man can understand enough to accept Jesus as their Savior
Ephesians 1:11 - He is working ALL things after the counsel of His will, but the Arminian says there are some things God wants but doesn’t get (e.g. lost men to be saved)
2 Thessalonians 3:2 - The lost do not have faith because God has not given it to them (Romans 12:3). The Arminian believe every man has faith, enough faith to be saved if he really wants it.
2 Timothy 1:9 - He saved us not because of anything we have done, but the Arminian says God saved us because we accepted Jesus.
1 Peter 2:8 - Jesus is the Stone that causes men to stumble, which is what they were destined for, but the Arminian says men weren’t destined to stumble, that anyone can be saved.

Bottom Line - there are NO contradictions in God’s Word but with the Arminian view of Soteriology, there are many.
